Client:
Aldi
The scheme required a 4 metre high retaining wall adjacent to the public highway in order to construct the Aldi Store and this necessitated an AIP (Approval in Principle) from the Local Highway Authority.
A former use of the site was as a sewerage works and during the early stages of construction a 4m wide redundant brick culvert was discovered adjacent to the main highway where the retaining wall was to be constructed.
The proposed sheet piled wall through the culvert was not feasible and so in conjunction with the Contractor, Architect and Local Authority, we moved the building and retaining wall 5 metres into the site. The scheme was completed on time and within budget despite this significant problem.
